Badshahi Mosque was built in the early 1670s under Emperor Aurangzeb. Its red sandstone walls, white marble domes and inlay work make it Lahore's best-known landmark, and it stands directly opposite Lahore Fort.

Whether you are visiting for the architecture or simply to sit in one of the largest mosque courtyards anywhere, these are the ten things worth knowing before you go.

Top 10 at Badshahi Mosque

  1. 1

    The Grand Entrance

A tall stairway leads up to the main gate. Remove your shoes and climb slowly: the courtyard opens up as you reach the top.

  2. 2

    The Vast Courtyard

One of the largest mosque courtyards anywhere, able to hold tens of thousands of people at prayer.

  3. 3

    Three Marble Domes

Three large white marble domes crown the prayer hall and give the mosque its famous outline.

  4. 4

    Four Tall Minarets

A minaret stands at each corner of the courtyard, framing the mosque from every angle.

  5. 5

    Red Sandstone and Marble Inlay

Deep red stone is set off by white marble and fine inlay, a signature of Mughal design.

  6. 6

    Fresco and Stucco Work

Look up inside the prayer hall at the painted and carved ceilings, which have been restored over the years.

  7. 7

    Hazuri Bagh

The garden between the mosque and the fort, built in the early 1800s under Maharaja Ranjit Singh. A good place to rest and take wide photos.

  8. 8

    Tomb of Allama Iqbal

The national poet of Pakistan is buried beside the mosque entrance, and many visitors stop to pay their respects.

  9. 9

    The Mosque Museum

A small museum on site displays relics linked to the Islamic tradition. Opening times can vary, so ask your guide.

  10. 10

    Sunset Views

Late afternoon light turns the sandstone gold. Plan your visit for the hour before sunset if you can.

Visitor tips

  • This is an active place of worship. Dress modestly, cover shoulders and knees, and women should bring a scarf to cover the head.
  • You will remove your shoes at the entrance. Slip-on shoes and socks help, because the stone gets hot in summer.
  • Prayer times can limit access to the prayer hall. Your guide will plan around them.
  • Check current opening hours before you go, and pair the visit with Lahore Fort across the road.
