Lahore Travel Tips

Is Lahore Safe for Tourists? Practical Safety Tips for Visitors

An honest guide to staying safe and comfortable in Lahore: how to get around, solo and women travellers, crowds, food and water, and who to call in an emergency.

A busy gateway into the bazaars of Lahore's Walled City

Lahore is one of Pakistan’s most visited cities, and thousands of travellers explore it every year without problems. Lahoris are famously hospitable, and many visitors say the warmth of the people is what they remember most. Like any big city, though, it pays to be prepared. Here is our practical advice.

Check the official advice first

Before you book, read your own government’s travel advice for Pakistan, such as the UK’s FCDO or the US State Department, and check it again just before you travel. Advice can change quickly and differs by region. Make sure your travel insurance covers your trip.

Getting around

  • Use ride-hailing apps such as Careem or inDrive, a car arranged by your hotel, or a driver booked through your tour company, rather than unmarked taxis.
  • Traffic is busy and fast. Cross roads with care, ideally with locals.
  • In the Walled City, walking or a rickshaw is often quicker than a car.

Crowds and public events

  • Avoid political rallies, demonstrations and very large gatherings.
  • Religious sites and festivals can be extremely crowded. Go with a guide who knows the best times and entrances.
  • Keep your phone and wallet in a front pocket or a cross-body bag in busy bazaars.

Solo and women travellers

Many solo travellers, including women, visit Lahore with a great experience. Dressing modestly (see what to wear in Lahore), going out with a guide or a trusted driver, and keeping your accommodation details private all help. One of our guests, travelling solo, described Bilawal as “a God-send on my first day in Lahore”; read our guest reviews.

Food and water

  • Drink bottled or filtered water, and be careful with ice and raw salads.
  • Busy, popular food stalls with fresh, hot food are usually the safest choice.
  • Carry hand sanitiser and any medicines you might need.

Air quality in winter

From roughly November to January, Lahore can experience heavy smog. If you have asthma or other breathing conditions, check the air quality forecast daily and bring a good mask.

Useful numbers in Lahore

  • Rescue 1122: emergency ambulance and rescue service in Punjab
  • 15: police emergency
  • Save your hotel’s number and your guide’s WhatsApp number on your phone

Travel with a local guide

The easiest way to see Lahore with confidence is with someone who knows it well. Our guides were born and raised in the Walled City, plan your route around crowds and prayer times, and stay with you throughout the tour. Hire a private Lahore tour guide or message us on WhatsApp with any questions before your trip.
