Babusar Pass is a high mountain crossing connecting the Kaghan Valley side with routes toward Chilas and the Karakoram Highway. The road is known for sweeping views, but its high elevation and seasonal weather make it a route to plan carefully—not a crossing to assume is open year-round.

Where the pass fits into a trip

Babusar Pass is often included in northern Pakistan road trips linking Naran and the Kaghan Valley with Chilas and destinations farther north. Route choice should depend on current road status, weather, vehicle condition and your driver’s experience.

Seasonal access

The pass is typically accessible only during a limited warmer-season window. Snow, ice, rain, landslides or official restrictions may close the road with little notice. Confirm the latest local road update on the day of travel and keep an alternative route or overnight plan.

Before you set off

Check tyres, brakes, coolant, fuel and spare tyre condition. Carry water, warm clothing, snacks, a first-aid kit and offline maps. Fill up before remote stretches and avoid relying on mobile coverage. Use a driver familiar with mountain roads.

Driving safely at altitude

Drive slowly, use lower gears where appropriate and avoid risky overtaking. Pull over only at safe, designated places, never on blind bends. If visibility deteriorates or the road feels unsafe, stop in a safe location and follow local advice rather than pushing onward.

Scenic stops and photography

The route offers wide mountain views and high-altitude landscapes. Use established pull-offs and keep clear of traffic. Wind and cold can be stronger than expected, so secure camera equipment and keep children close to adults near road edges.

Allow realistic travel time

Mountain journeys are affected by road works, livestock, traffic, weather and frequent photo stops. Do not rely on a map’s fastest estimate. If travelling onward to Gilgit or Hunza, consider staying overnight if the pass crossing or connecting drive would otherwise run late.

What to pack

Bring a warm jacket even in summer, waterproof layers, sunglasses, sunscreen, water, snacks, cash and a power bank. Keep important documents and any required permits accessible, and check whether your chosen route has current restrictions.

A flexible road-trip plan

Use Naran or another nearby town as a staging point, check conditions before departure, cross the pass in daylight and avoid fixed onward commitments. If officials or local drivers advise against travel, postpone the crossing.

Plan your Pakistan trip

Travel conditions, opening times and access can change. Confirm current details before departure and allow flexibility for weather or road delays. Past Enlighten can help you discuss routes and trip timing.
